Polish is an Indo-European language that belongs to the West Slavic language family. It is the official language of the Republic of Poland and one of the 24 official languages of the European Union, in addition to Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovene, Spanish and Swedish.

Interesting facts about the Polish language:

  • Between 39 and 48 million people communicate in Polish on a daily basis.
  • It is the dominant language in Poland, a country that is relatively homogeneous in terms of language.
  • It is also used in neighbouring countries such as Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Belarus, Ukraine or Lithuania, where the Polish population is a minority.
  • The Polish alphabet is based on Latin script and consists of 35 letters.
  • The letters Q, V and X only appear in words derived from other languages.
  • Polish shares the closest similarities and affinities with Czech and Slovak.
  • At the end of the 17th century, Polish was fashionable among the upper classes of Moscow – its knowledge was a measure of educational and cultural level.
  • There are currently around 10,000 learners of Polish worldwide.
  • A knowledge of 1,200 words is enough to start using Polish actively.
  • Poles are considered to be the sixth largest national group in the European Union.
  • Poles are the largest Slavic ethnic group living in the United States, and the largest Polish city in the United States is, of course, Chicago.
  • In 2022, Polish became the official language in the Brazilian municipality of Aurea.
